The 7th International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) was held from August 6 to August 11, 2016 in Beijing. This session of ICCM is jointly hosted by the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS) and the Morningside Center of Mathematics (MCM). About 1500 participants attended the ICCM 2016.
Winners of the Morningside Medal of Mathematics, the Chern Prize and the ICCM International Cooperation Award were announced at the ceremony on the first day of ICCM 2016. 5 Morningside Lectures were given at Tsinghua University, and about 30 plenary lectures and 150 invited lectures, which cover more than 40 topics of mathematics, were arranged at AMSS.
The International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) is a triennial event that brings together Chinese and overseas mathematicians to discuss the latest research developments in pure and applied mathematics. It is initiated by Professor Shing-Tung Yau and donated mainly by Morningside. ICCM is hosted by institutions in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on a rotating basis.
The first Congress was held in December 1998 at the Great Hall of the People and the Morningside Center of Mathematics in Beijing. The second Congress took place in Taipei in 2001, then in Hong Kong in 2004, Hangzhou in 2007, Beijing in 2010, and Taipei in 2013. In 2016, ICCM will return to Beijing again.

● Inaugural Ceremony of Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians and First Forum of Chinese Women Mathematicians Successfully Held
On October 4, the inaugural ceremony of the Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians (CCWM) and the first Forum of Chinese Women Mathematicians were grandly held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The establishment of the consortium aims to bring together the global community of Chinese women in mathematics, promote research in the field and the cultivation of talent, and build a professional platform for academic exchange, collaboration, and capacity enhancement for Chinese women mathematicians.

The inaugural ceremony of the Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians and the first Forum of Chinese Women Mathematicians were organized by the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM), co-organized by the Hong Kong Mathematical Society, and hosted by the Department of Applied Mathematics of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Distinguished guests, including Professor Shing-Tung Yau, renowned mathematician and Chairman of ICCM; former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor; Professor Wing Yin Poon, Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor Defeng Sun, Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and Professor Zheng Hua, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society, attended the inauguration and delivered speeches. Over a hundred scholars, students, and representatives from the field of mathematics witnessed this milestone moment. The inaugural ceremony was chaired by Professor Xiao-Jun Chen, Chair Professor of Applied Mathematics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
As a key proponent behind the consortium's establishment, Professor Shing-Tung Yau recounted the preparatory journey of CCWM in his address. As early as the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002, Chinese women mathematicians had expressed the need for a dedicated organization. Later, through talent cultivation practices at the Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University, he observed the significant potential of female mathematical talent -- specialized competitions for middle school girls selected participants whose level was comparable to their male counterparts, with some even performing better. He emphasized that CCWM will provide a pressure-free communication environment for women mathematicians, helping to overcome psychological barriers in competition, while also promoting the better development of female mathematical talent in scientific research and education, with the goal of cultivating more top-tier Chinese women mathematics researchers. Professor Yau mentioned that he is actively promoting the country's bid to host the 2030 International Congress of Mathematicians and hopes that increasingly more Chinese women mathematicians can play important roles in the bidding efforts, working together to achieve a successful bid.
Speech by Professor Shing-Tung Yau
Former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, highly affirmed the significance of establishing the Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians and shared her family's deep connections with the field of mathematics. She strongly acknowledged the crucial value of mathematics as the "foundation of science" and the contributions of mathematicians to major scientific research. She stated that the Hong Kong SAR Government has long attached importance to STEM education and development in mathematics, and the establishment of CCWM will provide a broader platform for exchange and cooperation for female mathematical talent, further contributing to the advancement of mathematics in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Professor Wing Yin Poon, Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, pointed out that the establishment of the Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians is a historic moment for the development of mathematics in China. She mentioned that Professor Shing-Tung Yau recently promoted the establishment of the "Zhi Zhen College of Cross-Disciplinary Mathematics" at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, echoing the talent cultivation model of Tsinghua University's Qiuzhen College. The establishment of CCWM in Hong Kong will further attract women to pursue careers related to mathematics, injecting momentum into China's efforts to build a strong education system.
Speech by Professor Wing Yin Poon
Professor Zheng Hua, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society, expressed congratulations and support on behalf of the Society for the establishment of CCWM. Professor Hua sincerely thanked Professor Shing-Tung Yau for spearheading the establishment of CCWM, creating a valuable platform for exchange and development for Chinese women mathematicians. She also thanked The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for hosting the CCWM inaugural ceremony and the first forum. In the future, the Hong Kong Mathematical Society will fully support the development of CCWM and, through active collaboration, make meaningful contributions in areas such as women's mathematics education, research, and career advancement.
Professor Defeng Sun, Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, stated in his speech that the CCWM emblem incorporates the image of a woman mathematician, resonating with the beauty of mathematics. The core role of CCWM is to gather outstanding Chinese women mathematicians from around the world, build a platform for exchange and innovation, promote mathematical research, and attract young women to enter related fields. CCWM will also become an important platform for recognizing and empowering women in mathematics, serving as a "beacon" and providing resources and support for Chinese women mathematicians globally.
Speeches by Professor Zheng Hua and Professor Defeng Sun
Following the CCWM inaugural ceremony, four distinguished women scholars in the field of mathematics delivered excellent academic reports based on their respective research areas: Professor Lei Chen, Researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Lynn Heller, Researcher at the Beijing Yanqi Lake Applied Mathematics Institute; Professor Ling-Yan Hung from Tsinghua University; and Professor Jiang-Hua Lu from The University of Hong Kong.

After the forum, the Consortium of Chinese Women Mathematicians held its first internal meeting, electing the Chair and Vice-Chairs of the consortium. In the future, CCWM will operate independently, facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration among Chinese women mathematicians through academic forums, talent cultivation programs, international exchanges, and other forms. It will also convey the needs and voices of the women's mathematics community to government departments, enhance the influence of Chinese mathematical strength on the global stage, and support China's bid to host the 2030 International Congress of Mathematicians.
